Six Suspects - Vikas Swarup

worth reading ..

Just like QnA is being picturised as Slumdog Millionaire , i think even this book has the potential to be a blockbuster . But considering the range of issues that it covers n its resemblence to real world events , Madhur Bhandarkar shld direct it .

The character Eketi is completely fascinating , but it is a little impossible to imagine an American as naive as Mr Larry Page .

The complications n twists in the last few pages may screw ur mind , but eventually the authors drills a point in the head quiet effectively . I think this is his attempt to nip many issues in the bud simultaneously . Good one ... i liked it ...

Riot

I have read this book a long time ago . Picked it up beacuse I wanted to read something written by Sashi Tharoor , after reading it I became a fan .

The lead character is , a young social worker, Priscilla Hart, who comes to India to complete her PhD coursework . The other is Lakshman , a South-Indian brahmin, District Magistrate in a riotous town . The story is about their love affair caught in the crossfire of the communal tensions in the 1980's .

This book is most unique in its style of story telling . What you would find at the end of every novel , you find here in the beginning . The first page itself tells you about the death of Priscillia . The rest of the story progresses to tell us why and how . In the process there are various issues highlighted , like the aspirations and pshycie of an Indian at that time , aspirations of a young girl from the western world , their combined dreams of the future , the tensions caused by religious sentiment in India and much more . The beauty lies in the way the author potrays a balanced picture of the communal tensions . What really emerges is the conflict of communities rather than the conflict of religions .

The novel is structured by means of various transcripts, interviews and letters . The plot grows on you and you actually dont get to the bottom of what Tharror is trying to say till you reach the very end .

It is a brilliant book , must read .

Q n A

Written by Vikas Swarup , an Indian diplomat , in 2005 .

The story is about an 18 year old waiter Ram Mohammad Thomas residing in the slums of Dharavi in Mumbai , who goes on to win the biggest prize ever in a quiz , a billion rupees .

What is most enticing is the unconventional mode of story telling in this book . The format follows a concept of Dualism , where there are two stories unravelling simultaneously , one is the present which is each question of the quiz and the other is the episode of the boys life related to that question . The most difficult for the author would have been to maintain consistency while keeping the reader engrossed because the story of the boys life goes back and forth in time . He has achieved this superbly .

In the process the author highlights the plight of an orphan in present day India , he tackels all difficult issues -incent , rape , torture and child labour . There is also subtle mockery at the current state of religion in the country , particularly the episode where he tells us bout the mystery of the boys name . There are some episodes which are almost gut wrenching , like the one in which an autistic child dies of hydrophobia .

But there is also a message in this book for all of us . As Swarup himself said "In the end I just trusted the reader to find light at the end of the tunnel".

A good book written with a lot of heart and soul .

Not a penny more not a penny less

After Shall we tell the President , just couldnt resist reading this one .

It is Jeffrey Archer's first novel , first published in 1976. It is said to have been inspired by Archer's real-life experience of near-bankruptcy .

Shall we tell the President ?

It is always a pleasure to read Jeffrey Archer .

I read this one last week , though I couldnt recall if I had read it earlier , but the fast paced thriller was completely entertaining .

Written in 1977 it is the third in the triology after Kane and Able and The Prodigal Daughter . It features Florentine Kane , the protagnist in The Prodigal Daughter as the first woman president of the United States , although u can directly jump to this one and still make sense of the plot

The story is inspired from a real incident where a plot to kill the president of the United States, Edward Kennedy, is foiled by an FBI agent working with the head of the FBI

The mark of a great storyteller is that although written three decades ago it still finds relevance , considering the fact that America is soon goin to vote and history may just be rewritten if Hillary Clinton becomes the first woman president of the United States .

bout books n authors

I am an avid reader and having read different kinds of books written by various authors , i have reached this assessment that the best way to approach reading a book is to first find out about the author .

Knowing the background of the author , his origins , country , upbringing , profession , the time in his life when he wrote the particular work all help in gaining a better perspective toward his approach to the particular work . For instance if you observe the writings , the timeline of the works as well as a brief history is readily available via various sources , the easiest being the internet . When you go through the profile of an author and compare his own works over a period of time , you will find a considerable difference which you can relate to easily , if you gain an insight into the his life in the same period . For example you can observe in several of the popular works , how the treatment of the characters changes corresponding to the events in the authors lives .

Another important factor which cannot be ignored is the era in which the the book is written . It is understandable that the writings of the early 1900s and the present will have an astronomical variation with regard to style , vocbualory and content . The same can be observed for books written in the late 1900s and the present . This is partly because the pace of evolution of the world also determines the pace with which its literature changes .

In this space , you will find my views and comments on the books that i have read ..
